Five common features of the tropical rainforest are as follows

1st This forest grows in area of high temperature and high rainfall these forests are found in area with an annual rainfall of about 200 CM or more.
2nd since these are found in regions with warm and wet climate throughout the year it has a vegetation of all kinds trees, shrubs and Creepers giving it a multi layered structure.
3rd there is no definite time for trees to shed their leaves so these forests of the green all the year round Andaman and Nicobar Islands coastal region of Tamilnadu and upper part of Assam have this type of forest.
4th Ebony, mahogany, Rosewood rubber, shisham are some of the important trees and important characteristic of these forest type is that a large number of species are found together hence it creates difficulty in commercial use of any particular variety.

  • These forests are restricted to heavy rainfall areas of the Western Ghats and the island groups of Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar, upper part of Assam and Tamil Nadu coast.
  • They are at their best in areas having more than 200 cm of rainfall with the short dry season.
  • There is no definite time for these trees to shed their leaves.
  • Some of the commercially important trees of this forest are ebony, mahogany, rubber,rosewood and cinchona.
