The success of democracy depends on the decentralization of power.  Local Self Government is have been elected by the local people and it act as democratic example in grass root level  by involving people in decision making about their local problems  

In the Panchayat Raj, the villagers have been participating   and responsible for all-round improvement in the village life, including education, sanitation, medical relief—curative and preventive, lighting, housing, maternity and child welfare, etc.  

It is also producing very good leaders at the village level who are innovating in ways to improve the democratic system

 Features of the Panchayat Raj

1.Uniform three tier Panchayat Raj system at the village, intermediate and district levels. However, States with a population of less than 20 lakhs are given the option to avoid intermediate level Panchaya

2.Gram Sabha has been hailed as foundation stone of the Panchayat System.

3.Head of the  Grama Panchayat is directly elected by the adult population living in the village.

4.Grama Panchayath/Municipality  has the power of taxation

5.The State Legislature may by law make provision for reservation of seats for backward classes.

6.One-third of seats at all the three levels and also the Chairperson elected to three levels, to be reserved for women
