Hexane and benzene are very dissimilar. For one thing, because benzene is aromatic, and is very hydrogen deficient compared to hexane, when it burns, it forms soot. So a black smoke raises from it, while when hexane burns, the smoke it typically white, if there's any smoke at all. So here's a chemical test for you. I'm sure there are more.
