→ Electric discharges take place radially at the pointed ends of a conductor.

→ The charge given to a conductor resides on the outer surface of it.

→ Van-de-Graaff generator consists of large spherical shell mounted on insulated stand. An insulated belt is made to rotate on two pulleys P1 and P2 , .

» A metal comb C1 is connected to high voltage rectifier (HVR) .
» Another metal comb C, is connected to spherical shell.

» The whole arrangement is enclosed inside and earthed steel tank. It prevents the leakage of charge from shel.

→ The comb C1 sprays positive charge to the belt. This positive charge moves up towards C2 due to the rotation of the belt. The negative charge appears on C2 due to induction , an equal positive charge appears on the outer surface of shell.

» As the belt is rotating continuously , show the charge on the shell S increase continuously. In this way the potential of the cell is to high potential.
