I was married for 40 years (1974–2015), just shy of 41, when my wife died on Feb. 3, 2015. My most cherished and treasured possession is my original wedding ring. My father-in-law was a gifted man, an artist. He took a solid, stainless steel shaft, cut it into 2 equal size pieces, drilled out the holes in the center, smoothed them, then shaped the outsides to match. He made mine and my wife’s wedding rings.
My wife’s ring was lost, years ago, it was stolen. It wasn’t worth anything to anyone else, except it was priceless to us. My wedding ring stayed on my finger for several years, until it became too tight on my finger. Being solid stainless steel, it could not be sized. It’s interesting, when my wife and I married, her ring was a size 10, mine was a 6 and a half. I had long, thin fingers. I kept it in my jewelry box, and that is where it still is. I can barely get it on my pinkie now, and even that is a tight fit.
I have worn the ring on a chain around my neck a few times.
I remarried in January of 2021, yet, I have a husband now. My husband is also a widower. He appreciates and admires that I still have my original wedding ring. I would be very upset if it was ever lost. Besides still having my late wife’s ashes, my wedding ring is all that I have left of her.
