Explanation:I slipped this destination into the itinerary for my trip to India after briefly reading about the Caves in the area surrounding Aurangabad & I'm SO glad that I did. The Ajanta Caves depict the stories of Buddhism spanning from the period from 200 B. C. and 650 A. D. There are some 29 Caves in this site, but 3 in particular are quite amazing for what is contained within. The painted stories on the walls are in remarkable condition. Given that these Caves were covered with mud for over 1,000 years before being discovered, the paintings were spared the damage from the elements & looters. To imagine them painting with perspective & in such detail some 2,000 years ago just boggles the mind. Just a heads up that you can stay at the Taj Aurangabad to access both the Ajanta & Ellora Caves. We did both in one day which is a little tough (2 hrs. out, 2 hrs. to drive to the second location and another hour to get back to Aurangabad.) We only had a day, well worth the effort.
