Newton's third law is applied when one system exerts a force on another and experiences an opposite force.

One example is a dropped object on the ground.

As the normal reaction, the object exerts its weight force on the ground, and the ground, in turn, exerts an equal and opposite force on the object.

As a result, the object has an action-reaction force pair.
