Answer:
Working memory is limited capacity temporary storage for things that are task-relevant. So basically you hold in working memory whatever you need to recall for the task you’re doing at the moment. Working memory has three components: the phonological loop, the visuo-spatial sketchpad, and the central executive.
For example, if you went to the grocery store without a list, you would use working memory to recall what you wanted to make for dinner that week, what items you had in the fridge, and what you needed to get. In this case, you’d mostly be using the visuo-spatial sketchpad for a visual memory of your fridge contents, and the central executive to help you plan the meals ahead based on what you have (problem solving) and what you can afford to buy (mental arithmetic).
Or suppose you wanted to phone someone whose number isn’t already in your phone, say a doctor’s office. You look up their number online; then you want to close the web browser and make the call. While the web browser is closed, but before you open the phone app and punch in the number, you might repeat the number over to yourself aloud a few times to keep it in your mind. This uses the phonological loop, for which rehearsal of auditory information keeps that information in the working memory so you can retrieve it.
