Friction is a type of contact force which acts against the direction of motion of every body. It is popularly also called a necessary evil because in few cases it is helpful and on the other hand in few cases it is not at all helpful and an evil.
A situation where more friction is helpful is that:
While stopping a vehicle, you apply brakes in order to increase friction between the tyres and the surface so that the car is stopped. So, here more friction is helpful.
