As soon as teacher handed over the report card, I ran towards my mother to show it. According to me I have done extremely well. I didn’t wait for my mother expert comments and without giving her an eye contact disappeared into my friends group. We discussed about summer vacation plans. Some were going to attend swimming lessons, few planned for art classes. Some disclosed the 10 weeks foreign trip plans. After few days, I and my parents were leaving for a holiday destination at a resort in Coorg place. This was a routine of my every summer vacation as my both parents work. We three go to a resort which is booked 6 months in advance. Last year we visited Manali. The places may be different but the routine was exactly the same. Still I was excited to go to Coorg.
At Dinner table, that night my father disclosed the cancellation of our Coorg trip due to some of office work at my Mom’s workplace. After an hour discussion, it was decided that I would be going to my grandparent’s village Khopoli. Fear ran in my body but I understood I have no option. Soon my bags were packed with hand sanitizer, medicine and first aid kit, hats, sunglasses, different purpose footwear etc. Next day our journey to Khopoli started. It is a small village in between Mumbai and Pune City. My Mother is born and brought up at Khopoli and now my Grandparents stay there. I have heard that my grandfather holds an important position in the village and everybody respects him a lot. My grandmother is a social worker and she has won various awards for her writing skills and social work. The thought of myself being misfit in the village environment was annoying me during the whole journey. Wondering I asked my mother, “How did you spend your school vacation at Khopoli?”She answered, “There was no summer workshops or much to do. Aaji would make lots of papads which needed to be baked in the sun. My friends and I would help our moms to spread them on the terrace and cover them in case of sudden rain. We even helped them to cut mangoes for pickles or chopping wood during electricity failure.” These fond memories of my mom and her village gave me more fearful feeling whether I would be able to do all this….
