The three reasons were:
i) Their export market collapsed.
ii) Stiff competition from goods imported from Britain which were very cheap.
iii) As exports of cotton from India increased, due to the civil war in USA, weavers in India could not get sufficient cotton and they had to buy cotton at high prices.

As the cotton industry developed in England, Indian cotton weavers faced three problems -
- their export market collapsed
- local market shrank being flooded with British goods. Indian handmade goods could not compete with fine machine made goods of England.
- Weavers were forced to buy raw cotton at exorbitant prices.
