The First Anglo-Sikh War was fought between the Sikh Empire and the East India Company between 1845 and 1846. It resulted in partial subjugation of the Sikh kingdom and cession of Jammu and Kashmir as a separate princely state under British suzerainty.

ANGLO - MARATHA WARS :

The internal problems of the marathas and the growing ambition of the english saw the conflict of intrests between the British and the Marathas during the period between 1775 to 1818.

FIRST ANGLO - MARATHA WARS :

British wanted to sign and Alliance with aspiring peshwa , Raghunath Rao against Madhav Rao II.

The maratha cheiftains backed Madhav Rao. British provided 2,500 men to raghunath. He gave Salsette and Bassein to English along with a part of revenue from Broach and Surat districts. The two sides signed the Treaty of salbai ( 1782 ). It give the British 20 years of peace with Maratha.
