This lack of uniformity in weights and measures causes me no end of troubles when i try to compare the metric system with the hodge-podge of American measures. I cannot keep the conversion charts in my mind when I try to visualize meters and kilometers, etc. We are the same as you with inches and feet but knowing how many stone you weigh is of no use at all.
I have a story about this: I have a Facebook friend in Nancy, France with whom I have communicated for many years. Once while on vacation in the US he visited me in Phoenix, Arizona where I lived at the time. I met him at his hotel and he said the airline had misplaced his baggage on another flight. He had no clothes except what he was wearing and his credit cards were in his baggage.

We had to have a sales girl measure him all over. He got a special kick out of having his inseam measured! All ended well and he paid me back the next day.
