The French society was divided into three estates. The clergy were the highest in the social hierchary ,they were exempted from paying tax and had liberty to demand tithes from the third estate.The second estate were the nobility.These people were court people ,officials, and army men.they were also exempted from paying tax and collected taille(a type of tax paid to the government during the old regime in france) from the third class.The third estate comprised of the commoners like shopkeeper artisans servants tec.These people were the only ones in the French society who were obliged to pay tax to both the clergy and nobility.
