In India traditionally rainwater harvesting is done in the following ways :—
(i) In hilly regions people built diversion channels like the guls or kuls for agriculture.
(ii) In Rajasthan rooftop rainwater harvesting is practised.
(iii) In Bengal people built inundation channels to irrigate their fields.
(iv) In arid and semi-arid regions people convert their agricultural fields into rainfed storage structures.

The traditional methods of rainwater harvesting in India are:
1)Guls and kuls: people build guls and kuls in hilly mountainous region to divert water. These are simple channels. They are mainly used in western Himalayas.
2)Roof top rainwater water harvesting : it is the method of collecting water from the roof top of the houses . It is commonly practice in Rajasthan to store drinking water.
3) khadins and johads : in arid and semi arid region, some agricultural fields were converted into rain fed storage structure. This structure are found in Rajasthan .
4)Tanks : in Bikaner ,Phalodi and Barmer,
almost all houses have tank for storing drinking water . Tanks are part of well -developed roof top rainwater harvesting system .
