Imagine that you are looking for a retail space for your handmade soaps business. You drive through your city and find so many options available to you. Now that you are looking for a commercial retail space, you see FOR LEASE signs everywhere. You see them in your neighborhood shopping plaza and you see them on freestanding buildings along busy avenues and streets. You also see them as you walk around downtown on your nights out. The freestanding buildings that you see as well as the spaces in the downtown area are called unplanned retail areas because these buildings weren't designed specifically as shopping areas. These buildings can be occupied by a retail store, or a restaurant, or even a law firm.
