Alauddin Khalji made an attempt to systemise and unify land revenue and urban taxes. He instituted a highly centralised system of administration over his realm. Under the early Delhi Sultans, Islamicland tax, kharaj, had been fixed at one 6th of the produce. ButAlauddin khalji raised the kharaj to 50% of the produce and introduced direct collection. He also imposed taxes on cattle and houses.

Alauddin khilji also control the prices of the commodities as he had to maintain the large army at a minimum cost. He fixed the prices of all commodities from grain to clothes, slaves, cattle etc. A controller of the market called the shahna-i-mandiand intelligence officers known as baries were appointed to implement the market control measures
