Answer:

the french society in the 18 th century was divided into three types of estates -

  • the first estate/clergy- priests of the church were part of this estate and they enjoyed many privileges but most of all they were exempted from paying taxes also they extracted their share of taxes from the peasants called as the tiths which included 1/10 of their produce.
  • the second estate/nobility- this estate included the members of the royal family they also enjoyed several privileges like exemption from paying taxes, etc.
  • the third estate- in this estate  90% of the people were peasants and the rest included administrative officials, traders, craftsmen, artisans, shopkeepers, etc. they were the only ones who paid taxes. they paid two types of taxes one to the clergies called as tiths and the second one to the state called as taille which was levied on articles of everyday consumption like salt, tobacco, etc. other than that they were also obliged to render their services to the lord/nobilities by joining the army or participating in building roads and they also had to work in the houses of the nobilities.
