Describe an activity to find out the conditions under which an iron rust?
Answers
When iron is exposed to
-moist air
-acid ranged water for a long time
it acquires a brownish coat. This is called rusting of iron.
Activity:
1. Take three test tubes and clean iron nails are placed in each of them.
2. label the test tubes A, B and C.
3. In the test tube A, some water is poured it is corked.
4. In test tube B, boiled distilled water is poured, and about 1 mL of oil is added.
The oil will float on water and prevent the air from dissolving in the water.
5. An hydrous calcium chloride is poured in test tube C and corked.
Anhydrous calcium chloride will absorb the moisture, if any, from the air.
6.leave these tubes for a few days.
Observations:
Nails in test tube A acquire rust because of air and water.
Nails in test tube B do not get rusted because air was prevented from reacting with iron.
Nails in test tube C do not get rusted because of same reason.
