Lightning is always accompanied by thunder.

So, the speed of sound is 3 * 108m/s.

And the speed of sound is 350 m/s.

Since the speed of light is so high and the distance covered would be in terms of a few kilometers, we can take the time taken for the lightning to appear as negligible or zero.

The activity is, the moment a lightning is seen, we can start a timer clock until we hear a thunder.

Say, the time lag between lightning and thunder is 8 seconds.

Multiply 8 with the speed of sound. = 8 * 350 = 280 m which is the distance of the clouds from the observer.
