Take 1 ml of ethanol and 1 ml of glacial acetic acid along with a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid in a test tube.Warm it in a water bath or a beaker containing water for at least five minutes.Pour the warm contents into a beaker containing 20-50 ml of water and observe the odour of the resulting mixture.We will notice that the resulting mixture is a sweet odoured substance.This substance is nothing but ethyl acetate, an ester.This reaction is called esterification reaction

Answer :-

Aim of the experiment :-

To host and study the process of Esterification.

Procedure :-

  • Take 1ml of Ethanol (commonly known as alcohol) in a test tube.

  • Add 1 ml of Acetic acid into the test tube containing Ethanol.

  • Add a few drops of Sulphuric acid in the mixture.

  • Heat the content on a water bath for about 5-6 minutes.

  • Smell the heated compound.

Observation :-

It is observed that the compound formed after heating the mixture of Ethanol, Acetic acid and Sulphuric acid, has a pleasant and fruity smell.

Conclusion :-

Therefore through the above experiment, the process of Esterification is successfully hosted and the steps for conducting the experiment are clearly understood.
