There are some compounds when heated transform from solids into gases directly without undergoing into liquid state is called sublimation. Activity showing the conversion of solid directly to gaseous state as:

  • Take a few drops of ammonium chloride. Put it in a china dish after crushing it.
  • Place a funnel inverted over the china dish. and place a cotton plug on the funnel's stem.
  • Next use a Bunsen burner to carefully heat the china dish while keeping an eye on it.
  • Ammonium chloride which is in the solid state, will instantly transform into the vapour state when exposed to heat.
  • As the vapours rise in the funnel, they begin to condense and form ammonium chloride crystals.

This activity explains the sublimation process.
