Yes. Oxygen is necessary for combustion. Lets prove tis with the help of the following experiment.

Experiment

Aim: To show that oxygen is necessary for combustion.

Material Required: Two candle, matchsticks and a bell jar.

Procedure:

  1. Light up one of the candles using the matchsticks.
  2. Now, light up the other candle and keep the bell jar over it.

Observation: The candle which was covered with the bell jar stopped burning and the other one kept burning.

Reason: As the other candle was covered, it used the the oxygen available to it and when, no oxygen was left, it extinguished. However, since the other one had complete supply of oxygen, it kept on glowing and burning.

Conclusion: Thus, we can conclude that oxygen is necessary for combustion.
