The animal kingdom is originally known as "Kingdom Animalia".

Some characteristic features of animals are as follows :-

  • The animal body generally exhibits a specific symmetry, form and shape.

  • Animals have the capacity of locomote (move from place to place) in search of food, shelter and habitat.

  • Growth in animals is determined and occurs proportionately in all parts of the body.

  • Animals are generally heterotrophic as a result of which, they gain nutrition by ingestion of their food, which is obtained from other plants and animals.

  • Animals posses the property of irritability.

  • Animals sport the capability to respond to a stimulus.

  • Animal cells do not hold the ability to synthesize all the essential Amino acids, Vitamins and Coenzymes due to which, they need to obtain them from external sources.
