* the French needed regular supply of resources and other essential commodities for trade and other purposes.
*so they began building canals and draining lands in the Mekong delta
*This was done with forced labour to increase cultivation
* consequently rice production increased and they started to export rice to international markets
*Vietnam exported two - third of rice production and by 1931 it became the 3rd largest exporter of rice
