Following are the few causes for the expansion of Bombay in the 19th century:
1. Textile mills were established which led to a fresh surge in migration.
2. Many people flowed in from many districts of Ratnagiri to work in Bombay mills.
3. Being the junction of two major railways, it helped directly for Bombay expansion.
4. The railways encouraged an even higher scale of migration into the city.
5. In 1888-89 famine in Kutch drove large numbers of people to Bombay.
