Today’s developing countries were colonies of European powers, and at the time of their independence were primarily agriculture based economies.
2) Their agriculture was inefficient and international prices for agro output were not enough for them to pursue development.
3) Increasingly countries like Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand adopted manufacturing and focussed on tertiary services.
4) In many countries the transition from primary to tertiary took place after adopting modern methods of cultivation (e.g. India and Green Revolution).
5) The primary sector in almost all these countries had disguised unemployment due to which these countries had to follow a policy of urbanization, attracting the excess labour from primary sector to serve in all other sectors, primarily tertiary.
6) Even in India, the tertiary sector accounts for the major inflow of foreign exchange and provides gainful employment.
