The Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) is India's most ambitious express highway project. It makes a quadrilateral by connecting India's four main metropolises: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. This network also serves Bengaluru, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Surat. The National Highways Development Project (NHDP) was in its first phase at the time. It consists of 5,846 kilometres of four/six lane express highways that cost 60,000 crores to construct. In January 2012, the four-lane GQ highway was completed.
