The major functions of political parties :  

1: Contesting election - in democracy election are fought mainly among the candidates put by political parties

2: Forming programmes and policies :parties put forward different programmes and policies and the voters choose from them.a party reduces a vast multitude of opinions in to a few basic position which to supports.

3: Making laws : Parties play a decisive role in making laws for a country. Laws are debated and passed in the Legislature.

4: Role of Opposition: : Those parties that lose in the elections play the role of opposition to the parties in power . opposition parties also mobilize opposition to the government .

5: Access to government machinery and welfare schemes : Parties provide people access to government machinery and welfare schemes implemented by governments.parties have to be responsive  to the needs and demands of the people.
