Many researchers have studied the accomplishment of many developmental tasks which have determined the typical ages that are associated with each developmental milestone. A few examples of the different developmental tasks that show the difference in between a 3-year and a 13-year old teen girl are -
1. Physical development - While a 3-year old can start using a pencil to scribble and color with crayons, a 13-year old is already in high school getting ready for the boards. A 3-year old can pour liquids into a glass while spilling it a little, whereas, a 13-year old is capable of taking much care of themselves and reaches full physical maturity.
2. Emotional development - A 3-year old usually becomes sociable and friendly with others, plays with children and is able to share with others. Feels more secure and cooperative with adults. Likes to help and consider the needs of others. In teenagers, emotional maturity is constantly shifting, moving them between childish needs and adult desires. They become less concerned about adult approval and turn instead to their friends.
3. Intellectual development - Toddlers can sort objects by size, and type, by color or by shape. Understand simple things to do at once. They can arrange toys and play by themselves with imaginary friends. For teenagers, this is a time of maturing of the mind and behaviors as young people develop more responsibility for their thoughts, words, and actions and start to think ahead to future occupations, marrying, and having children of their own. Young people increasingly take personal responsibility for finances, accommodation, employment and interpersonal relationships.
4. Language development - A toddler can start talk mother tongue fluently and communicate their needs and wants with others. They start to use high pitch and tone. They can talk in past and future tenses. A teenager's constant sarcasm and wit can become irritating, but they are just testing their new, sophisticated language skills. Their logical thinking ability is also maturing and they may enjoy practicing their new intellectual and verbal skills through debating, humor, or satire, either formally or informally.
