The Physical properties of Metals and Non-metals are :
1. Physical state :
- Most of the metals are solid at room temperature. Mercury is the only metal known to occur in liquid state at room temperature. No Metal exists in gasesos state.
- Non-are generally solid or gaseous.
2. Malleability and Brittleness :
- The property which allows the metal to be drawn into thin sheets or foils is called Malleability.
- The property due to which Non metals break up into pieces on hammering is called Brittleness. Non metals are generally brittle.
3. Ductily :
- The property which allows metal to be drawn into thin wires is called Ductily.
- Non-metals are not ductile.
4. Lustre :
- Most of the metals are lustrous, that they have a shiny surface. This property is called metallic lustre.
- Non-metals do not have shiny appearance like metals. They have dull appearance. However iodine and graphite show some lustr.
5. Hardness :
- Metals are generally hard for example iron metal is very hard and strong.
- Non metals are not hard or strong. They easily break when a large weight is put on them only diamond (a form of carbon) is the highest naturally occurring substance.
6. Tensile Strength :
- Metals usually have high tensile strength. the property which allow the substance to bear a lot of strain without breaking is called tensile strength.
- Non-metals have low tensile strength. So, they break easily. However, carbon fibre has high tensile strength.
8. Ductily :
- Metals have high densities but sodium and potassium have low densities.
- Non-metals have low densities and are very soft but diamond has high density.
Extra information :
Generally all metals show similar chemical properties but their reactivities depend upon their nature and reactive conditions. Metals are different from non metal depending upon their chemical reactivity.
