Social Causes :-

1) The French society was divided into three estates and only the people belonged to the third estate had to bear the burden of tax payment.

2) The member of the first two estates, that is, Clergy and Nobility, enjoyed certain privileges by birth. Also they were exempted from paying taxes to the state.

3) In the French society, inequalities existed at every level. The peasants had a very miserable life. The Noblemen freely destroyed the peasants' crops when they went out hunting.

4) The Nobles were given feudal privileges. These included feudal dues, which they extracted from the peasants.

Political Causes :-

1) The despotic and autocratic rule of the Louis XVI had angered the common people.

2) The cost of maintaining an extravagant court at Versailles was becoming high.

3) Under Louis XVI reign, France had sponsored the American rebellions against their common enemy, Britain. This war had increased the burden of  debt on France enormously.

4) The French monarchs had unlimited powers and they had declared themselves as the "Representatives of God". The king's administration was corrupt and inefficient.
