  • The British East India Company (EIC) had launched an "outright war" of nonintervention and the conquest of territories of previously "subordinated rulers", i.e. the incorporation of Indian States in the British force.
  • Under this system, all Indian rulers had to agree to pay British subsidies to support the British Army. For exchange, the British would shield them from their foes and the British would have greatly expanded.
  • The allies of the rulers of the Indian State were forced to recognize and subsidize the permanent British Army garrison. Without the British permission, the Indian ruler was unable to employ any European in their service.  Without the consultation of the the Governor General, they was not permitted to negotiate with other Indian state rulers .
  • In addition, the Subsidiary Alliance policy was a document which meant that the state was not entitled to maintaining diplomatic relations, self-defense, maintenance of diplomatic relations, the use of international experts for the settlement of its disputes with neighbors.The states that had come under this alliance were Hyderabad, Mysore, & Awadh.
