civilizing mission- French thought it is their duty to introduce modern ideas though it meant destroying the culture, religion, and traditions since they were outdated.
Talking modern- those who learnt French were rewarded with citizenship
Looking modern- Tonkin free school was started to provide western education. school encouraged the adoption of western styles such as short hair which was against the Vietnamese' beliefs.
