Personification is giving human qualities to objects that are non-human. The story "Winter Oak" is full of personifications, like:
"The path wound along the edge of a brook, now hugging its bank…"
Here the author is describing the path, but the word hugging makes the path sound like a human being.
"Occasionally the trees stepped aside…"
Everyone knows the trees cannot move, but here the author makes it sound like the trees were specially trying to move out of the way. This too is an example of personification.
"In places the stream was covered with a thick blanket of snow, in others it was enchained by smooth ice armour…"
Here the stream sounds like a person who has been tied up in icy chains.
I like the second example the most because the personification of the trees stepping aside makes it sound very welcoming.
