The Constitution clearly provided a threefold distribution of legislative powers between the Union Government and the State Governments into 3 lists namely Union, State, and concurrent list. The fundamental provisions of the constitution cannot be unilaterally changed by one level of government.

I - Union List on which centre make laws such as defence, currency, etc.

II - State List on which state make laws such as police, trade, agriculture, etc.

III - Concurrent List on which both Centre and State Legislates such as education, marriage, etc.
