Political developments in India after the lifting of emergency in 1977.

1. The major opposition parties came together and formed a new party known as the janta party under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan.
2. First non congress government came at the centre . The janta party and its allies won 330 out of the 542 seats in the lok sabha . Janta party itself won 295 seats and thus enjoyed a clear majority.
3. 44th Constitutional Amendment plugged many weaknesses of the Indian constitution.
4. Janta party could not remain united and cracks appeared in the form of contestation for the post of PM.
5. Between the elections of 1977 and 1980, the party system had changed dramatically. The congress party now identified itself with a particular ideology, claiming to be the only socialist and pro poor party.
6. After 1977, the congress was wiped out in north but its electoral fortunes in south India remained largely unaffected.
