The British took many steps to curb the nationalists, like  -

1. The British passed the Rowlatt Act in 1919. It empowered the Government to repress the political activities in India. It permitted the detention of political prisoners without trial for 2 years.

2. The British imposed martial law whenever a mass movement was launched by the nationalists. For instance, during the Rowlatt Satyagraha, Non-cooperation movement and the Civil Disobedience movement the satyagrahis were humiliated and terrorised.  They were forced to crawl on the streets, rub their noses on the ground, and salute all the sahibs. The British resorted to repressive measures and flogged the demonstrators.

3. The British arrested the nationalist leaders of the mass movements and put them in jail. For instance, during the Civil Disobedience movement Mahatma Gandhi, Abdul Ghaffar Khan and other leaders were arrested.
