Describe any three suppressive measures taken by the British administration to clampdown on Nationalists .
Answers
The British took several measures to put a check on the nationalists. Some of them were -
1. They passed the Rowlatt Act in 1919 which gave the Government enormous powers to repress the political activities in India. It allowed the detention of political prisoners without trial for two years.
2. They imposed martial law whenever the nationalists launched a mass movement. For example, during the Rowlatt Satyagraha, Non-cooperation movement and the Civil Disobedience movement they humiliated and terrorised the people. The satyagrahis were forced to crawl on the streets, rub their noses on the ground, and do salaam to all the sahibs. They resorted to repressive measures and flogged the people.
3. They caught the nationalist leaders of the mass movements and put them behind the bars. For example, during the Civil Disobedience movement Mahatma Gandhi, Abdul Ghaffar and other leaders were arrested.
