Answer: There are three basic forms of tourism: domestic tourism, inbound tourism, and outbound tourism.

Domestic tourism;  refers to activities of a visitor within their country of residence and outside of their home (e.g. a Brit visiting other parts of Britain).   (2) In domestic tourism, people travel outside their normal domicile to certain other areas within the country as contrasted with travelling outside the boundaries of the country as in international tourism.  ( 3 ) according to the world travel and tourism council , domestic spending in India is 87. 2%

(4)Domestic tourism is BIG business in some countries, bringing in a significant revenue for the economy of the local area and nationwide.

(5)Popular destinations for domestic tourism include the USA, India and China

Inbound tourism; (1)  refers to the activities of a visitor from outside of country of residence (e.g. a Spaniard visiting Britain).   (2) inbound tourism is often seasonal, meaning that many destinations will have evident peak, shoulder and low seasons. This is often dependant on weather conditions (for example sun or snow) and school and public holidays.    (3)This is largely because of the economic benefits of tourism. Tourism can bring in a lot of money to a country through foreign exchange. This is particularly beneficial in countries where the currency is weaker than the currency of the tourists’ home countries.

(4)China produces one of the largest outbound tourism markets in the world and Chinese tourists tend to spend more on their holidays than any other nationality. Therefore many countries want to attract Chinese inbound tourists due to the economic value of this market

(5) The main disadvantage of inbound tourism is that the destination is at the mercy of the transport network.

There are many cases of tourism industries being decimated because an airline has stopped operating a particular route.

Inbound tourism can also lead to culture clashes.

For example, British tourists who travel to Dubai are often not aware of Muslim cultural practices. As such, it is common for the local population to be offended by the tourist’s behaviour.

Outbound tourism; (1) refers to the activities of a resident visitor outside of their country of residence (e.g. a Brit visiting an overseas country).

(2) Outbound tourism does not include the purchasing of good or services before or after the trip within the tourism generating country. The terms outbound tourism and inbound tourism are often used interchangeably.

This is because a tourist who is travelling internationally is both an outbound tourist (because they travel OUT of their home country)

(3) The outbound tourism market has grown considerably throughout the years.

Of course, the outbound tourist market has grown at different rates in different parts of the world, but the reasons for this growth are largely the same.

Three of the biggest factors contributing to the growth of outbound tourism are: the advent of low cost travel, increases in disposable income and leisure time and globalisation.

(4) In recent years the amount of disposable income that the average person has each year has increased. This means that people have more money to spend on international tourism.

People also have more leisure time than they used to. Paid holidays and increased flexibility as a result of flexi-time practices at work, means that people have more opportunities for international tourism than they did in the past.

(5) More people want to experience outbound tourism nowadays than ever before. Globalisation has opened up many opportunities for us around the world.

(6)Outbound tourism is hugely important to many countries around the world. The OECD have a handy tool on their website which demonstrates the value of this tourism in different parts of the world.
