Helen loved all kinds of books. She was a voracious reader. At Cambridge, she had the opportunity to read many books in English history, English Literature, German, Latin, Arithmetic, etc. But she was particularly fascinated by Burke's "Speech on Conciliation with America" and Macaulay's "life of Samuel Johnson." Burke's speech instructed her mind on political subjects. She learnt a lot about King George and his ministers. She very much liked Macaulay's portrayal of Samuel Johnson.
