Decide the timetable and programme of elections - The election commission decides when to conduct elections and in how many stages to hold elections in every state.

Scrutiny of the applications of candidates - i) Selected candidates of political parties as well as independent candidates have to fill the applications which include the information about their own self. ii) The Election commission scrutinizes all the applications and allows the eligible candidates to contest the election.

Give recognition to political parties - i) In India, we have multiparty system. ii) The election commission has the right to recognize or derecognize the political parties. iii) Election commission also allots election symbols to the political parties.

To resolve any dispute relating to elections - i) The Election Commission has the responsibility to resolve any disputes that may arise regarding elections. ii) The election commission can declare any candidate as disqualified or conduct reelection in a particular constituency.

  • Main function of election commission is conduction of election and solving election related problems with direction, election control and superintendence.
  • This is their responsibility to look after the matter of election and make it fair and free manner through out the country. This includes the process of preparation of electoral roll and its revision before election.
