The Social causes of the Revolt of 1857
Explanation
- The main cause of the revolt of 1857 was the introduction of the Enfield Rifle. At that time there was a rumor that the grease used in Cartridge are made of fats of cow and pig. The sepoys had to bite the Cartridge to load the rifle.
- This hurt the religious sentiments of both Hindus and Muslims because for the Hindus Cow was regarded as sacred and the Muslims considered Pig as impure.
- The British East India company wanted to bring changes in the Indian Society. They abolished the Sati system , introduced the Widow Remarriage, child Marriage was stopped. These changes brought by the British were considered unnecessary interference by the Orthodox Hindus.
