Habeas Corpus: This writ is used to protect individual's liberty. It is issued when a person is detained illegally and wrongfully, to produce him before the court. This writ is available to private persons also.

Mandamus: It is issued against the State or its authorities having any public duty towards citizens and public compel them to perform their public duty, in case they refuse to do so.

Prohibition: It is similar to the Certiorari. It prohibits the lower courts to proceed with the case and hand it over to the higher courts. In case of Certiorari, final judgement is taken where as in Prohibition, case is in progress.

Certiorari: This writ examines the functioning of Subordinate Courts. It is issued when lower courts violate the jurisdiction and commands to bring the matter to the upper courts.

Quo Warranto: It is issued to restrain a person from holding a public office which he is not entitled to or he has usurped any public office.
