The bending of light when it travels from one medium to another medium is known as the refraction of light.

Since earth atmosphere is very thick, with variation in the density with the height. So we can divide the atmosphere in different layers of different refractive index. When the sun rays passing through the atmosphere suffer refraction known as atmospheric refraction

Atmospheric refraction is the deviation of light or other electromagnetic wave from a straight line as it passes through the atmosphere due to the variation in air density as a function of height. This refraction is due to the velocity of light through air, decreasing with increased density
