[The Bayer process is the principal industrial means of refining bauxite to produce alumina (aluminium oxide).Bauxite, the most important ore of aluminium, contains only 30–60% aluminium oxide (Al2O3), the rest being a mixture of silica, various iron oxides, and titanium dioxide.

Crude bauxite contains impurities like iron oxide ( Fe2O3 ) and silica ( SiO2 ). These impurities are removed by Bayer's process. In this process, the ore is first crushed and then treated with hot concentrated caustic soda ( NaOH ) solution under hifh pressure for 2 to 8 hours at 140C to 150C in a tank called digester. Aluminium oxide being amphoteric in nature dissolves in aqueous sodium hydroxide to form water soluble sodium aluminate.
