Sometimes, blood vessels are injured and it starts bleeding. If this loss is not to be minimised, it would lead a loss of presence of blood. Due to this efficiency of pumping system decrease. So, to avoid this harmful situation, our body has a protective system of clotting the blood. This is carried out by the platelets.

The platelets move towards the site of injury of blood vessel. At this site, they release the clotting factors. These clotting factors change the soluble blood proteins into insoluble one, which appear in form of long fibres. These fibres form a network. This network entraps blood corpuscles in it forming a jelly like mass - the clot. It is deposited over the damaged part of the vessel. On coming in contact with air, it contracts and solidifies.
