Under pressure from the World Bank, Bolivia was forced to privatize the water supply in Cochabamba that was the country’s third biggest city. This decision was not favorable among the people and gave way to a general strike in 2000. The strike marked a protest against privatizing water resources and the increase in water tariff because of the privatization.
Although the leader of the protestors Oscar Olivera was arrested, nationwide protests resumed and caused the government to call for a state of emergency. However, this did not stop the protests and resulted in many deaths. Finally, the government released the leader and an agreement was signed to end the concession.
