Sustainable development is defined as development that meets "the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". That means, that developmental projects are planned to meet the long term needs of the population, and not only those of the present.
Unsustainable development is the sort of development that does not consider future needs and the protection of the environment (or of social needs) on its plans. That is not always the product of deliberate carelessness. More likely, "many acts of unsustainable development, in which we all have participated, are driven by good intentions and a lack of understanding of the possible long term consequences." .
