Answer :

In the short story "The Last Leaf" by O. Henry, Sue and Johnsy were two young artists who lived together. One day Johnsy got infected by pneumonia and developed the conception that she would die when the last leaf on the creeper outside her window fell. The doctor said that she had lost the desire to live.

Behrman was an old painter who lived on the floor below Sue and Johnsy's apartment. He had been trying to paint a masterpiece for years. When he came to know about Johnsy's illness, he went out in the night and painted a  leaf on the wall outside Johnsy's window. Johnsy had retired that night with the idea that the last leaf would fall in the rain and her life would soon come to an end. However, when she saw that the leaf had survived the storm her desire to live returned and she slowly started recovering from her illness.

Behrman had worked through the rain and snow to paint the leaf outside Johnsy's window. As a result, he caught pneumonia and died. He sacrificed his own life to save Johnsy's life through the means of his masterpiece - the last leaf painted on the wall.
